Gutter Cleaning Prices: What to Charge Per Foot and Per Job

Gutter cleaning is the easiest add-on service in the exterior cleaning trade and the one most often given away too cheap. It is quick work when the house is single-storey and the gutters are clear, and it is a half-day of ladder repositioning when it is not. Pricing it on a flat per-foot number without adjusting for height and debris is how contractors end up working for free.

Typical gutter cleaning prices

Job typeCommon totalPer linear foot
Single-storey, average home$90 – $180$0.70 – $1.20
Two-storey home$150 – $325$1.20 – $2.00
Three-storey or steep access$300 – $500+$2.00 – $3.00
Gutter guard removal and reinstall+$1.00 – $2.00 / ftAdd-on
Downspout unclogging+$25 – $75 eachAdd-on
Exterior gutter face brightening+$1.00 – $2.00 / ftAdd-on

Ranges reflect commonly quoted contractor prices in the United States and vary by region, roof height, and debris load.

What moves the price

  • Height — every extra storey multiplies ladder setups and safety time
  • Roof pitch and landscaping that block ladder placement
  • Debris load — wet compacted leaves and shingle grit take far longer than dry litter
  • Gutter guards, which must come off and go back on
  • Whether you bag and haul debris or leave it bagged on site
  • Whether the customer expects the gutter faces washed too

Bundle, do not discount

Gutter cleaning sells best attached to a house wash. Quote it as a separate line at full price and offer a small same-visit saving instead of a blanket discount — you save one mobilisation, not the labour.

Price it from your hourly number

Per-foot rates are a sanity check. The number you quote should come from your own required hourly revenue multiplied by realistic on-site hours, including ladder moves, cleanup, and haul-away.

(On-site hours × required hourly rate) + disposal + travel = floor price

Round up to the nearest $5 and quote the recommended tier, not the floor.

Put the scope in writing: which gutters, whether downspouts are flushed, whether guards are removed, and what happens if you find damage. A clear written quote is what separates you from the ladder-in-a-pickup competition.
